Another frame build...

So then, i sold the steel Jones fork last month i had bought for a future fatbike build, having decided that the fatbikes i have i am happy with for how they are for now. I like my surly Pugsleys with the stock fork and reversible wheels-keeps all the wheels interchangeable, and  i also have a few spare offset wheel rims so why change things?.  The larger Surly Moonlander is fine as it is. Time to find a cheap 29er MTB frame to build a budget MTB. With the cheap £100 Rock Shok fork i recently bought it will be a cheap bike that can be left outside cafes, locked on back of car outside the supermarket and not too worried about looking after it etc...

The MTB fork/bar/gear shifters and brake set;

Above is the 29er MTB fork/bar/shifters/brakes/flat pedal MTB kit i could fit to the drop bar Karate Monkey 29er if i wanted to. a rummage around the man cave found a saddle, front mech and a few other parts
A search on line found a  £59 9 speed Deore crank set from CRC, and a Sram 991 chain....

Another frame???
Why another 29er frame?. well as mentioned in the last blog post my Karate Monkey frame set has a broken carbon seat tube which does not allow dropping the seat post when needed for steep descents etc...so why not build another frame set i can add the Karate Monkey wheels to?. allowing another bike build?, hell yeah!, and this box arrived last week..

Opened up and it is an On One Inbred 29er...

At £150 it is cheap, maybe not the same quality of finish as more expensive frames but for a budget frame it should be ideal...

Time to pour a pint of cider and do a bike build ...

A new £18 headset was pressed in...

Then forks added...

Bar set was added and gear cables routed...

All frames have some neat feature and this frame has neat cable routing with tubes with allowance to fit complete outer cable with no messy cross over...

Time for the new Shimano Deore external BB...

Pint was nice...

Clear lube the crank axle and fit the cranks...

Front mech has a 2-3mm gap from the 44t big chain ring...

Getting there...

£18 rear Shimano `Sora` road mech (medium lenght) fitted-these are basically the same mech as a Deore MTB mech...

Drop out need a rub with wet and dry to thin the powder coat, then the rear wheel slipped in ok...

Wheels on and centre the Avid BB7 brake callipers...

Chain on using the time old method of fitting it to the smallest rings, then pull it to meet each end, then remove a link to get the correct chain lenght...

Old spoke makes a handy third hand while cutting the chain and fitting the quick link...

Set the rear mech limit screws...

Then set the front mech lower limit screw...

Fit the front inner gear cable then that allows you to set the outer limit screw...

When i fit new inner gear cables i always lube them, usually with silicone but none in stock so used 3-IN-ONE...

Cables on and the gears were running sweet...

Cut and crimp the ends...

Tweak the seat/bar angle and job done...

Time to go a shake down ride before sunset....

The bike rides nice, 3x9 speed gears are solid being LX shifters and Deore drive chain, BB7 cable disc brakes are good enough-these ones are my `breathed on` callipers. This bike is good enough for riding around here...

  1. Enjoy the new bike. I have an On One Scandal 29er frame and the build quality is better than my Surly frames. I'm a Surly fan boy so that's saying something.

    Great prices.

I want to build the GF a bikepacking bike for next year and have considered a 1x1 or Krampus, but also looking at On One because for a bike that won't see regular use it makes sense to keep costs down.

  2. Hi Vik, hope you are well and life is good!
Indeed the price is a big draw to On One products, Looking forward to miles and smiles on the Inbred! :)

    cheers

  3. I've been thinking the other way and looking at a 29er wheel set for the On-One Fatty. I agree with Vic about low use/low cost, but I don't think I'll buy another On-One, it just feels harsh. The LHT is more like an old armchair...and about as fast. Different frames for different missions. I just feel comfy on the Surly.

  4. Hi Ped, my big brother has ordered the 29er wheels for his Fatty. Be good to get a ride of it being my size in medium!
